Balance — Principles of Design

Balance

These flowers were carefully distributed in order to create a vertical balance in the middle. Both sides of the photo contain the same amount of flowers, it visually looks like if both sides were put on a scale they would weigh around the same which is why it is the perfect example of symmetrical balance.

Contrast — Principles of Design

Contrast

The pink flowers are big and saturated, with deep shadows, and on the other side the white flowers are small and pearly white with little shadow. These are big differences between both sides which is why this is an example of contrast, because different elements like colour and size to compare the objects in the image.

Emphasis — Principles of Design

Emphasis

The first thing the viewer's eyes go to in this photo is the flower in the middle of the photo, which is why this is the perfect example of the principle of emphasis. This happens because of different elements like how the flower is in the centre, there is a clear contrast between the white flower and the dark green background. There is also lighting contributing to making the flower the main focus, there are a lot of shadows in the background, and the flower is well lit with little to no shadow.

Movement — Principles of Design

Movement

The flowers were arranged in a worm-like path that allows the viewer's eye to follow from the beginning of the line to the end of it. This is why this is an example of Movement in design, it clearly directs the attention of the viewer.

Pattern — Principles of Design

Pattern

This image uses the same colour, the petals from the same flower and an order that it's consistent throughout to create the principle of pattern. It is a consistent design with many elements like shape and colour that are the same which creates a repetition.

Unity — Principles of Design

Unity

The idea of using flowers for this ISU came after I saw my Graduation bouquet and I saw how it had so many different types of flowers and leaves but they still looked good together. It reminded me of the principle of UNITY, where every piece works together to create a cohesive image. The flowers, leaves, and baby breath all work together to make the bouquet complete which is why this is an example of unity.
